The wait will soon be over! Four years on from the release of my debut CD My Best Mate, I am just about to launch my next musical project - Crisps & Monsters. It is another CD collection of my own songs - some of which are already well-known and other brand new material.
There are 8 songs which are all pretty short (ideal for school assemblies!) together with the corresponding backing tracks and a CD booklet containing all the lyrics. The songs are:
Listen Monster and Cartoon Champions both began life as theme songs to holiday clubs that we've done at Upton Methodist Church. I wrote Listen Monster after I read the suggested song in the holiday club resource book! Cartoon Champions was slightly different in that for the first time I created the entire holiday club pretty much from scratch - which included having to write my own theme song. I was overwhelmed with the reaction that this song seemed to generate when we used in in the summer.
Musically speaking there is a greater variety of styles on this CD: pop, rock, rap(!) and funk. In fact, as I've migrated more and more to the bass guitar as my first instrument these days, I think you'll feel a much stronger sense of rhythm in this stuff. Basically - I've got my groove on!
Thanks to the Methodist Church, I was able to produce the CD during a three month sabbatical break. As I have greater experience since the last CD and also a slightly larger budget, Crisps & Monsters is a quantum leap from My Best Mate in terms of sound quality. This time around I've had my final mixes professionally mastered by a proper sound engineer which makes a big difference in the overall sound of the songs.
The songs are aimed at children and all-age environments and I hope they will be useful to others in school assemblies, all-age worship, Brownie and Cub packs, youth groups etc. I hope they will also prove enjoyable and helpful for people to listen and sing along to in their own homes. As well as being Christian-based and catchy, the songs tackle some important subjects e.g. coping with things that frighten us; using our talents and recognising that Jesus is present with us in the ordinary things of life.
