Wow! What a wonderful week we've had together at Cartoon Champions!
Cartoon Champions was a Christian-based children's holiday club (for children at school aged 5-11 years old) organised by Upton Methodist Church. The club ran every morning from Monday 25th to Friday 29th July 2011 from 10 am till 12 noon. It was a week jam-packed full of craft activities, quizzes, songs, stories, Sooty & Sweep (+ friends) and fun and games (including refreshments).
Some of the highlights of each day ...
Get Crafty - We had a go at a whole host of different craft activities this week. Everything from sheep and crowns to pompoms and pig moneyboxes!
Video - We watched a short
animated parable each day starring the hilarious Brian, Vincent and Phil and
their boss , Sir Barry, who sets them a different task each day. They managed to
live out the parables of the two houses, the lost sheep, unmerciful servant,
persistent widow and prodigal son. The award-winning video is the work of a brilliant British Christian animator called John Taylor and you can find out more here. |

In The Spotlight - Back by popular demand by all 'fans of the fin', Mark The Shark gave us the low-down on a different cartoon character each day.
Brian's Biscuit Break - Drinks & yummy homemade biscuits each morning! Actually they were Rona's not Brian's!
Champions' Challenge - The daily team game which tested our ability to look, count, remember and just guess! Well done to the three winning groups.
Songs - All your favourite funky action songs (plus some new stuff too)! The brand new Cartoon Champions Theme Song that we sang all week will be on Nick's forthcoming new CD which should be out before Christmas. His first CD is still available to purchase here. I was really chuffed how popular the theme song seems to have been this year and well impressed with the many children who can sing it word for word with all the right actions (something I can't always even do myself!). |
Sooty & Sweep's Stories - Sooty and Sweep (and their mates) were back in full effect trying to recreate the Bible stories we've been hearing about - in their own hilarious fashion! This year we also got to meet the rather unforgiving Florence the Flamingo; a very 21st century sheep (who still got lost!) plus the return of Brian The Lion, Soo and of course Squawky! |
The Messy Bit - Oh yes! We just couldn't do a Holiday Club without it! More challenges - more messy than ever! Brilliant! This year, being the 10th anniversary of the holiday club, we did some favourites from previous clubs plus also some new stuff too. We tackled cold custard, flour, slime, shaving foam and baked beans! It just has to be done! |
The week wrapped up
as we did last year
with an extra-special Cartoon Champions
service on
SATURDAY

FOR ALL AGES
followed
of course
by a barbecue!
It's hard to believe that this was the tenth children’s holiday club that we’ve run. Every year is different but every year is brilliant. This year it was also tinged with a bit of sadness knowing that it will be the last one that Suzannah and I will run in Upton as we are moving on to pastures new next year (July 2012).
So to everyone over the past ten years who has led groups or helped lead groups; baked thousands of biscuits; served refreshments; cut out badges; photocopied until the machine broke; moved ridiculously heavy pews - and then moved them back again; planned craft activities; registered children; administered first aid; painted scenery; organised The Messy Bit; cleaned up after The Messy Bit(!); flipped hundreds of burgers and sausages;
to everyone who has attended a holiday club; who has been brave enough to do The Messy Bit; everyone who has sang the songs and done the actions(!); everyone who has written a joke or drawn a picture or written a prayer; everyone who has made something to take home; who has persuaded their family to come to the BBQ or to let them come to the BIG BUG Club on a Sunday; to every parent or guardian who has let their children come along; and to every parent, grandparent, brother, sister or family friend who has ever waited patiently outside in the pouring rain for us to open or close;
to all of you - I can only say ...
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
It's been a blast and I couldn't have done it without you.
