In the Methodist Church baptism is a rite of Christian initiation. In other words it is the way we welcome people into the family of the Church. Very often this service involves babies who obviously cannot answer for themselves hence the parent(s) make promises on their behalf. People are baptized usually by having a cross signed on their head with water from the font. Parents wanting their children baptized must affirm their own faith and Christian commitment and promise to actively bring their children up in the Christian faith.
As far as the Methodist Church is concerned, a Christening is just another name for a baptism although it's not actually a word which is used in Methodism.
A dedication service is a service of thanksgiving for the birth of a child. Parents give thanks for their child, make promises to care for them and ask God's help in their family life. In contrast to a baptism there is no promise to actively bring up one's child as a Christian (with all that involves) but the door is left firmly open for the child to make up their own mind about the Christian faith and to be baptized later when he or she can answer for themselves.
I think Jesus is just the most amazing person to ever walk the face of this earth. I believe that he is God's Son who was born as one of us to help us and save us. When he died on the cross and came alive again I believe he did it for us - to clear away all the rubbish in our lives that separates us from God and to give us an opportunity to be filled with his Holy Spirit and to really start living. I believe that to follow Jesus means loving people the way he loves them - particularly the ones who get downtrodden and sidelined in our world today. I respect a lot of people but for me no-one comes close to Jesus - my Lord, Saviour and best friend.
